๐ŸŒ Cup o' Go LIVE in SF with Bill Kennedy! Hosted by Antithesis

Shay Nehmad:

I'm gonna do this.

Bill Kennedy:

Go for it.

Shay Nehmad:

Just because it's not your show, and it's... It'll be weird. And I don't wanna put you in a weird position, like recording a podcast in San Francisco at 8AM.

Bill Kennedy:

You just made it weird. This is Cup of Go for 10/07/2026. Keep up to date with the important happenings in the Go community in about twenty minutes per week. I'm Bill Kennedy.

Shay Nehmad:

And I'm Shay Nehmad. And you're not Jonathan. What the hell is going on?

Bill Kennedy:

I did take his hat or a similar hat. So

Shay Nehmad:

We are recording live in the beautiful Antithesis office in San Francisco. If you were here during the recording or you watched the recording online, because hopefully we'll get it there, you know that we don't have a ton of time. So let's jump to the first item that's on our agenda. Conference roundup. What's the next big conference that we wanna talk about that we haven't talked about in the show yet?

Bill Kennedy:

So I'm super excited about this one because I've never been there. Gopher Con, Japan in February next year. I've been to every GO conference, but there was one in Russia one time, and I haven't been to this one. And this one is running every year. And this year coming up, and I've talked to a couple of the organizers, they're gonna have much more English than they normally have there.

Bill Kennedy:

So if you've never been to Tokyo, you wanna hang out with a bunch of really wild... Those Tokyo gophers are wild, man.

Shay Nehmad:

Yeah.

Bill Kennedy:

Met them up in Singapore. Whoo. So that is always gonna be a good time.

Shay Nehmad:

Yeah. It's gonna be February thirteenth and fourteenth in Tokyo. If you're confused, we talked about another Go conference in Japan that's coming up next which is the Tiny Go conference one.

Speaker 3:

So I am dead program. In the real world, some people call me Ron Evans. I'm a technologist for hire at a consultancy called The Hybrid Group, where we make the software that puts your hardware to work.

Shay Nehmad:

What... So you're gonna be there, hopefully?

Bill Kennedy:

No. I have to be in Sydney. No. The the big group

Speaker 4:

is gone.

Bill Kennedy:

Oh, no, no. I can't say a 100%, but it is on my list to be there next year. I've talked to the organizers, so we're going to make it happen.

Shay Nehmad:

Well, good luck. But anyway, important to note that this is far enough away that there is a tab here called call for papers or call for proposals. So if you want to speak, we really encourage you to do so. It's a really good way, even if you just have a half baked idea, just think about it. Just write it yourself and not have AI write it for you, don't read it, and then send it to the committee.

Shay Nehmad:

That's just me. I saw this really great blog post that I wanted to share. It's not really news news. It is new, which is why I thought it was relevant. So it's by Kamal, and this is the first thing that I noticed because he was also on our show.

Speaker 4:

Yeah. My name is Kamal. Kamal Akkorian. I'm originally from Turkey, but I'm living in Germany, Berlin now. I work for Datadog.

Speaker 4:

I've been working on observability tooling and Go since, I guess, this point, 2020... Like 2017, 2018.

Shay Nehmad:

And this is a really cool series of blog posts, which I think is a thing that you like to do, which is looking under the hood of a thing and understanding it like one layer, then you have to just to use it. So there's a whole, how can you hook into the Go tool chain? This is pretty deep, so I don't think it'll carry, not here, because it's almost and not in audio format, but it's a long, long read. It's like, if you actually want to write code alongside with it, you got to set, like make yourself a cup of tea and set aside an hour. But what it lets you do, or what it teaches you, is how you can, like, sort of understand the Go Build toolchain from first principles.

Bill Kennedy:

This blog anyway is brilliant. I can't remember Jesus' last name, but he's writing a lot of it and he's maintaining it. And there is a ton of great articles over this last year that go deep into internals around Go. He actually wrote some posts around Crunk and did some internals. So if you're looking for some heavy reading, not light reading, definitely check out this blog.

Bill Kennedy:

It's, I think, the best one right now in the go community.

Shay Nehmad:

Yeah. Jesus Espino.

Bill Kennedy:

Yeah. Espino.

Shay Nehmad:

This is just to give you a taste. This is at least the part that I really liked, is what it actually does. And then you add all these flags and you start actually reading the output and just trying to understand what happens. I've often said that it's a superpower to just sort of slowly read every line of output that people put in their tools twice. It's getting harder now, at least for me, that I'm getting so much AI generated responses from Claude that immediately I skipped the beginning of whatever it says and the end where it's like, Do you want me to do another thing?

Shay Nehmad:

And I just try to find the information.

Bill Kennedy:

Yeah, but you paid for those tokens, man. You should read them.

Shay Nehmad:

So I work at a VC funded startup, so I didn't pay for anything. Maybe we should cut that out.

Speaker 3:

You know

Bill Kennedy:

what? Let's

Shay Nehmad:

keep it. It's fine. So this is a... If you're interested into looking under the hood and you enjoyed our interview with Kamal, this is a blog post recommendation. And as usual, there's a good blog post in a blog, so just go check out the blog and the person who wrote it too.

Shay Nehmad:

I can't believe it, we're in the last news item already, and this is an opinion piece I want from you as a local go sort of expert person. But for the people who don't know like what you're about, other than Adelina Labs and all the talks ever, what you're about right now since, like, last October?

Bill Kennedy:

Yeah. So I'm here because we were just showing off that cronk project, which is allowing you to run local models in Go applications with the model server and Ysma sitting behind it. And we saw this, Ron Evans and I saw this project maybe a month ago. And what this project's doing, the GoLAMA project, it's... It was basically allowing you to have WISM support with the LAMA APIs.

Bill Kennedy:

And after I showed Ron this, he didn't sleep for a month. And now Easema has full WASM support as well. In fact, if you go to the Easema website, he has a demo for it as well, and you can actually, in the browser at home, start running model inference right there in front of you. So Ron's gone super crazy. I don't know if this project is as up to date as EZMA, but it was at least a month ago before Ron decided not to sleep again.

Shay Nehmad:

And the... You're saying it can run-in the browser because it's WebAssembly, so you can run it in the browser. I hope that didn't make too much noise. But the use case that Ron is interested in, of course, is running it on, like, edge devices. Right?

Bill Kennedy:

He wants to put it on those little Adrenos and the Raspberry Pis and then attach a very large balloon to it and send it up into the atmosphere and have it do whatever the things that Ron does. But if you haven't seen Ron's TV... You know Ron's recording a TV show?

Shay Nehmad:

I think he talked about this in the interview he did with us.

Bill Kennedy:

Yeah. This talking heads. If you haven't seen this, go look it online. And he's recording a new episode at every conference. Even if he's not talking at the conference, he is bringing these talking heads with him.

Bill Kennedy:

He's got three talking heads attached to either a Raspberry Pi or Adreno, and they're all talking to each other, and they're all from the future saying all about our demise. And it's all pretty funny, but you can find this on YouTube because Ron's been recording these episodes at every conference, and I wish he would share the tech that he's built a little bit more because it's ridiculously amazing what he's doing with easement there, but it's a lot of fun.

Shay Nehmad:

Yeah. And I'm pretty sure he's gonna be in the Tiny Go... The Talking Head specifically is gonna be in Tiny Go conference in Japan next week. Told he told me that in the in the interview. Maybe it will, maybe it won't, but you can find it on YouTube.

Shay Nehmad:

Why... What is the place you think, you know, you have this project, ISMA and Kronk and whatever, and then you see this project, which is like similar, sort of doing the same thing. I've never been a maintainer of a non commercial, like big open source thing like Crunk or something like that. Does this make you feel like weird? Like, why are they doing the same thing?

Shay Nehmad:

Why are they just contributing to mine? Is this actually good? Because you can look at it and get ideas and whatever. Like, how does this meet you?

Bill Kennedy:

I think it's a double edged sword because thanks to all the coding models today, anybody can just decide, oh, I can do that myself. And maybe we're losing a little bit of community there because people feel... I'm at a point now that if you're going to do a startup and you're building something, you better get a six month head start before anybody knows about it. That might be able to get you to a point where somebody's like, I don't know, it's six months I have to rebuild as opposed to let me work. Right?

Bill Kennedy:

And Ysmer are a year in. Like, if somebody wanted to restart that project, go for it. But you've got to catch up for an entire year. I'd rather you participate with us. So I think it's getting scary for anybody to announce something that they're doing that isn't at least six months already baked.

Shay Nehmad:

Yeah. People just talking about it now with JEV and Type one, whatever, they release it after two years of being in stealth and then open source System one models, not as good, but come out like a week later. So it is a bit spooky for sure. And with that, it's time for a quick Ad Break. This show is supported by you.

Shay Nehmad:

Not all the people who you heard woo right now are Patreons, but they could be if they wanted to join our Patreon and kick in a few bucks a month. The best way to support us is to support the show directly financially. We use it for hosting fees and editing fees. If you want to find the link to that and all the rest of our stuff, it's kapago.dev, which includes all the past episodes, the link to our Slack channel, which is free to join, and I hope you all will join. It's interesting discussions there.

Shay Nehmad:

Or you can email us at newskapago. Dev, that is newscapago. Dev. Next best way to support the show is to share it with a colleague, or a friend, or your mom, or upvote it in whatever platform you're using to listen to podcasts. Spotify, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, or whatever you, Pocket Casts, or whatever you use to listen to podcasts, or just write about it like in your blog or whatever, as more traffic comes into Cup of Go, and podcast traffic is kind of hard to measure, but more of it is LLM based.

Shay Nehmad:

People asking ChadGPT, Hey, what should I listen to to like stay up to date? Or what are some good technical whatevers? So if we can poison all that training data and say, This show is the best, it would be really good. It can also be your legitimate opinion. I would like to thank my temporary replacement cohost, Bill Kennedy, for joining for the second time.

Bill Kennedy:

Thank you. But nobody can really replace John.

Shay Nehmad:

No, nobody can replace Jonathan. And with that, we will say thank you and program exited. Goodbye.

Bill Kennedy:

You did it. Two minutes late. Yes. I

Shay Nehmad:

I was like... You know what I was looking at right now?

Bill Kennedy:

What?

Shay Nehmad:

I was like, oh, no. It's not recording. It's recording. It's recording.

Speaker 3:

Do over.

Shay Nehmad:

I have like
